A team of Explorers from the group’s partner Unit were victorious in this year’s Wolds Challenge; which took place on Saturday 19th March.
The Wolds Challenge is a one day hiking competition for Scouts and Explorer Scouts; organised by the Fells Marathon Committee of Blacktoft Beacon District Scouts. The event is a test of navigation, route finding and team work, as well as a walking challenge.
Finn, Greg, Ged & Pat completed the 17 mile route; which started and finished in Wetwang in a time of 3 hours & 34 minutes; finishing almost 40 minutes ahead of their nearest rivals; reigning champions, Pocklington.
The second team from the Unit; Jack, Harry, Jude and Jonny finished the course in 5 hours and were placed fourth.
In the Scout competition; over a shorter 12 mile course; 5th Beverley ‘2’ (Morgan, Toby, Josh & Josh) finished in a creditable 10th place with a time 3 hours 59 minutes.
5th Beverley ‘1’ (Matty, Gabriel, Adam, Sam & Glyn) experienced some navigation issues which led to them missing one of the mandatory checkpoints on the route and as result they were not awarded a place in the overall competition but they completed the course in time of 3 hours & 43 minutes.
5th Beverley ‘3’ made up of 4 of our youngest Scouts (Max, Macca, Katy & Chris); competing in their first Wolds Challenge completed the course in 4 hours 59 minutes and though not qualifying for a place in the competition as they were accompanied by leaders during the event; they recorded the 32nd fastest time of the 40 teams that completed the course.
